Q&A: Athiests. Answer the question properly this time.?

Question by doug: Athiests. Answer the question properly this time.?
Dont ask for proof, on a hypothetical.
What if you were a witness. What would you think?
I DONT HAVE THE PROOF YOU WANT. bUT ANSWER IT IF YOU WERE A WITNESS TO THESE.

1) Say, for example like in Portugal 1917. A few kids had visions from the Virgin Mary. Mary said at a certain time and date, she would perform a miracle in a certain location.
So say, like the 70,000 pilgrims like in Portugal, started traveling to the location and you follow too and see out of curiosity. Theres heavy rain, but your clothes aren’t getting wet.
Suddenly you reach the location, then the rain stops and the Sun dances in front of everyone, then flashes brightly and settle back to normal.
Keep in mind technology isnt around to create such an effect in that time.

Google for non biased sites if your interested

2)Or say your in Jerusalem. Its the Orthodox Christian Easter.
Your with a religious friend.
Your dragged to the service.
Your holding a candle, and suddenly the church is flashing and your candle lights in front of you eyes. the priest exits the tomb with the holy light too, but everyone around you jumps for a piece of the flame. You put you flesh over the flame, but its not burning. Cool effect.
Later after 33 minutes you put flesh over the flame again, but it painfully burns you.

3)Or say your with a friend with chronic pain without a cure.
There a crying Virgin Mary Icon.
Your friend visits it and has a church member collect the myrth coming out of marys eyes and collect it on a cloth then perform the sign of the cross over the area in pain.
A week later your friend is cured.
You’ve witnessed these things, HYPOTHETICALY
What will go through your mind?

    again… i would get a CAT scan

  2. Wolfechu II says:

Your link, like your god, appears to not exist.

  3. Liberal Asskickers Nightmare says:

I would try and figure out what REALLY happened. Because it damned sure wasn’t a “miracle”.

    There. Ya happy?

  4. neil s says:

I do not generally categorize experiences until they can be scrutinized. Upon scrutiny, my original answer stands.

  5. Villyj Ideyut says:

    Ahem.

    “properly this time”

    Do I win?

  6. The Cynic says:

I would get an MRI done.
    No kidding.

  7. Sesquipedalian Sucklebeast says:

Hypothetically, if monkeys flew out of my rear end would you acknowledge that what you’re asking doesn’t have any relevance?

Aviator: That analogy doesn’t hold because one could -actually- witness those things.

  8. Aviator says:

Say you went to a magic show and Doug Henning made an elephant or an airplane disappear. Or you saw David Blaine on the street and he levitated. Say you witnessed these events.

  9. rac <°?**?>< says:

It’s easy to make up fiction – such as the 70,000 fictitious witnesses of the events which did not happen and so on.

It’s a bit like the 500 people who supposedly saw Jesus resurrected, but who were never identified so that they could be questioned – all we have is Paul’s words that there were 500 witnesses.

    TLDR

    thx for the 2 points.

Btw buddy questions longer than like 6 lines are usually ignored.
    Yours is over 35 lines.

  11. Jenny says:

Being the skeptic that I am, I would get my head thoroughly examined and blood checked for drugs/hallucinogens before jumping to conclusions.

  12. SnowAngel29 says:

first two: holy crap, I must be dreaming.
third: wow, my friend is strong willed.

people make their own choices based on religion and if it is their choice not to believe, then that is a faith as well.

  13. Einstein says:

If your idea of a proper answer is one that you like, forget about asking.

  14. Operation Mindcrime says:

I’d think it’s a crock of S***. If you think this would occur you’ve have been having long showers. So my cure for you is to get your hand of it and think about how ridiculous this question is.

  15. Pull My Finger says:

‘s 2 and 3 would not convince me. I’d think it was some kind of illusion on my part. If I experienced #1 for myself, I’d definitely be shocked. If I thought that was exactly what happened, I’d probably have to think about it. It would be a lot more convincing if the Virgin Mary spoke to me before hand instead of some kids, though. Because otherwise, I might assume something catastrophic and unusual happened, but how could I be certain that I should attribute it to God?

  16. ?_? ?r.smile says:

“what the hell is wrong with these people.” that’s what i will think of.

there’s always an explanation for everything… we may not know it then but i’m sure it’s not magic.

what will you think of if you replaced christian-based names with pagan names and gods/places and ask that to yourself?

  17. Elizabeth says:

You must be retarded. Honey are you retarded?

  18. The Doc says:

Unfortunately, although those would all be very unusual occurrences, even if they could be documented and proven absolutely true, they do not prove that any sort of supernatural being exists, and they certainly don’t prove that your particular conception of a supernatural being exists.
I would certainly be very surprised if anything like that happened to me, and I would try to find an reasonable explanation. If I could not, then I would just have to leave it unexplained, some things are not explainable yet, sometimes we miss important information and it can’t be recovered. I would not invent an all-powerful, invisible being and then credit him with it, it’s just not warranted by the data.

  19. Common Senses says:

I would say that I need to stop smoking weed cause that’s the stupidest shit I’ve heard all day

  20. Chris B says:

    1) who are you kidding… fireworks have been around since before christ in china… 1917, effects are more then a little possible and can be further intensified in peoples mind with a little effect known as mass hysteria.

Id also think im under an umbrella…

    2) Id say this was shock.

    3) Id say my friend is a strong believer and is subject to hypnosis.

Show me a cancer patient surviving or someone with aids or better yet resurrect someone goodly then talk to me of miracles.

  21. Bill K Atheist Goodfella says:

Hypothetically speaking, I would gather as much evidence as possible in order to prove whether there was a natural, or supernatural explanation.

  22. Ms. Taurus says:

If we don’t, will you post it again?

Because, I don’t about anyone else, but I would just LOVE to not give a damn about reading all that like ten more times.

  23. Rai A says:

I gave my daughter a charm to ward off monsters under the bed.

As we’ve not seen any – must mean it works….

Sorry but that’s using the same logic as you’ve used.

  24. IMD Ana says:

what will go trough your mind if your girlfriend, or even your son’s girlfriend tells you that she is pregnant by the holy spirit and that she is waiting for the son of god, and that you or your son have to marry her because you’re supposed to be a father for the “Lord”… oh but she tells you that she’s a virgin…

  25. Doopadooo... says:

Honestly, I would think that my seizure medication wasn’t working very effectively anymore, or that I was beginning to suffer from severe mental illness. Either way, I’d see a doctor. Also, you should never underestimate the immense power of mass hysteria.

Number 3, it’s all mind over matter. I know this from personal experience, as I’ve suffered from 2-3 migraines a week since I was 14. Sure my head hurts, but debilitating chronic pain is usually all in your mind. It doesn’t help that chronic pain pushes people into depression, which makes the pain worse because of perspective, so it’s really just a vicious cycle. If someone prays to Mary, sees a shaman, or makes a pact with themselves, I don’t really care. I just care that they found something that works for them, whether or not they realize that they, themselves, were the biggest force in getting better.

  26. crl_hein says:

I’d have to be sure of at least four things

    1) Have to make sure nobody slipped me a mickey or any other drug.
    2) Make sure I’m not in a coma.
    3) Make sure I’m not in a dream.
    4) Make sure I have not been abducted by aliens.

Once I have made sure of all four of these things I would search for scientific evidence to support the phenomena and if that doesn’t work then nothing but supernatural explanations are needed. This would not however support the Judeo-Christian god in any which way it could very well be Isis or Hera trying to make a comeback. These hypothetical situations must have also have had happened to me personally not me hearing about it through the grapevine. Hope that answers your question.

  27. Sage says:

    Why are you soooo desperate?

Is your faith really so weak?!!

A lot of GOOD christians are indignant that such postings as yours make all christians look so bad and intolerant – they will all be praying for your soul!!!

  28. volpe.dimitri says:

I know you addressed your question to atheists but I just wanted to commend you ; the negative feedback was to be expected though ; after all, even when Jesus performed miracles some witnesses doubted. But I liked your question ; it’s always nice to find some light in a very dark place. May God bless and protect you and keep you in His Holy Light !

  29. z_jepoh says:

I’ll search for David Blaine or David Copperfield. Maybe one of them is somewhere nearby… you should watch national geographic and they’ve discuss a lot on those so called miracle…

  30. Wood Uncut (unaffiliated) says:

The third one I would put down to the power of the mind. We know placebos are often effective. A similar thing is likely in operation here IMO.

As to the first two I’d be curious. But because of my lack of belief I don’t know I’d immediately jump to the “God did it” explanation.

In fact, if I did think they were miracles, I’d wonder why God’d bother with such party tricks when there are millions of people around the world in need of some form of real help in their lives? Seems cruelly pointless to me.
