Taylorville IL – Christian County Courthouse, North and West Facades (2008)

A view of the north (left) and west sides of the beautiful Christian County Courthouse on the Square in Taylorville, in Central Illinois. Completed in 1902, this is the third courthouse to serve Christian County. In the foreground is a reminder of an earlier courthouse that stood here. The statue shows Abraham Lincoln and a pig, and commemorates the day in the 1850s that Lincoln argued a case in the courthouse, some pigs under the floorboards started squealing, and Lincoln asked the judge for a "writ of quietus" to shut them up.

Taylorville is the seat of Christian County, and is located about 25 miles SE of Springfield. The population of Taylorville was 11,427 at the 2000 census.

For more images of Taylorville, visit my "Taylorville IL" (Set).

Central Illinois (except Springfield)
: Central Illinois (except Springfield): Photos relating to the middle section of the "Land of Lincoln" (except for the Capital City of Springfield) may be found in this collection. Every city and town I’ve photographed is contained within its own set, and rural (as in "counrtyside") photographs are grouped by county.

Springfield, Illinois
: All of my photographs of Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Sites are in this collection. For the City of Springfield, there are separate sets for the Capitol Complex, Downtown (including the Old State Capitol), Neighborhoods, Parks, Illinois State Fairgrounds (and past State Fairs), and more. Photographs of Lincoln sites include the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, Lincoln Home National Historic Site, Lincoln Tomb, and so on. Also in the Lincoln "All About Abe" (Set) are a few Lincoln sites not located in Springfield.

Beyond Central Illinois
: Other locales in the United States and Canada including New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle.

In addition to my location-based sets, here are links to some "topical" collections and sets I’ve put together:

Automobile Photograph Collection
: This is a very large collection of images whose primary, but not exclusive, focus is on American automotive classics. Images are organized by decade, by manufacturer, and by topics (such as convertibles, station wagons, muscle cars, etc.)

Barbers & Barber Shops
: Traditional barbers and barber shops are on the endangered species list. But there are still plenty to be found if you go looking for them.

Almost Everything Else. Check It Out!!!
: Included topics range from man’s first walk on the moon to small town schools and churches, and from Soft-Coated Wheaten Terriers (our favorite breed) to things that are abandoned, neglected, weathered, or rusty.

Madaba is an ancient town that was abandoned for many, many centuries. When it was repopulated in the late 1800s by Christians fleeing communal tensions in nearby Karak, the Ottoman authorities told them that they were free to construct new churches, provided that they built them over the top of existing (abandoned) Christian sites. When they began doing so, they started unearthing all sorts of wonderful mosaics, dating from Roman times to the early Islamic period. Many people building and restoring houses elsewhere in the city also found richly detailed mosaics, and today Madaba is well-known throughout Jordan for its antique tiles.

This is the most famous of all Madaba’s mosaics – it’s a perfectly rendered map of Madaba’s immediate surroundings, made at some stage between 550-600AD, and originally featuring over 2m tiles. However, most of the map is now missing, although nearby Jerusalem (above) is well-preserved. This cartographically accurate depiction of Old Jerusalem has aided archaeologists in the identification of a number of structures there.

Information about Singapore

Lying almost on the equator, Singapore is not just one island but a main island with 63 surrounding islets. The main island has a total land area of 682 square km. However, its compact size belies its economic growth. In just 150 years, Singapore has grown into a thriving centre of commerce and industry. Many other fine reminders of Singapore’s colonial past remain, despite the island’s relentless development.

Perhaps Singapore’s greatest treat is the variety and quality of its food. For only a few dollars you can have a bowl of steaming noodles, curry and rice, or delicious satay, all at the same food stall table. Spend a little more, or a lot more, and Singapore has hundreds of restaurants serving the best Chinese, Indian, Malay, European and other International cuisines.

Singapore Shopping

Where to Shop and What to Buy in Singapore

Alongside ‘eating’, shopping is considered the national past time on the island. Ranging from hi-tech wares to designer wear, there is something for everyone. Browsing around local markets and shophouses in the ethnic enclaves to the glitzy portals of Orchard Road, the experiences are wide, varied and even intriguing.

For most visitors, Orchard Road is a must-visit on the itinerary. Packed with modern malls and hotels, this stretch is transformed into a dazzling display of lights and festive embellishments at Christmas time when all buildings join in the annual festive light-up. Fabulous knick knacks and other memorable finds are also found in Chinatown, Arab Street, Little India and the suburban areas like Holland Village, Katong and Tampines. Unlike most Western countries, shopping hours usually start from late morning to 21:30 or 22:00 at night and these can extend to as late as midnight during festive season.

The mid-year Great Singapore Sale is a much looked-forward to time when prices come down heftily in all precincts. Even during non-sale times, visitors will do well to bargain, particularly, in electronic stores found at Lucky Plaza, Sim Lim Square or Far East Plaza. A general rule of thumb for haggling is to begin about 25% -30% below that being offered. Do make it a point to compare prices at various shops. For convenience, most stores accept credit and charge cards.

Goods and Services Tax

Visitors who spend more than S0 in a single receipt are entitled to  their 7% GST (Goods & Services Tax) refund if they leave Singapore by air under two central refund agencies – Global Refund Singapore Pte Ltd and Premier Tax Free (Singapore) Pte Ltd. Terms and conditions apply.

Hotels in Singapore

Singapore has various standards of hotels based on your budget. It ranges from the cheapest to the most expensive hotels depending on your budget.  The wonderful part of it is, most hotels are linked with one of the most advanced transport system like the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) or the LRT (Light Rail Transit). Taxis are available everywhere and runs on meters only.
