Religions of the World – Zoroastrianism

www.WatchMojo.com presents… A look at some of the major religions from around the world.

Michael Shermer and Dinesh D’Souza go toe-to-toe on some of the greatest issues related to science and religion: is there evidence for God’s existence, what is the proper relationship between science and religion, and has religion been a force for good or evil in the world?

    – the persians of iran were very peaceful very productive zoroastrians for hundreds of years and were flourishing much more then than they are now
    – zoroastrian iran was the most advanced country in the middle east before the violent muslims invaded iran
    – arab muslims militarily invaded iran and violently forced the persian zoroastrians to convert to islam
    – then the country declined into hell
    – islam is a poison

  2. JazistheGreatest says:

    @LK2H
    – muslims murdered many millions? of nonmuslims when they violently invaded over a dozen nonmuslim countries during the islamic conquests

    – muslims murdered many millions of homosexuals living in muslim countries throughout the past 1400 years

    – muslims are currently oppressing the homosexuals much worse than the israelis are oppressing the palestinians

    – but you never hear the muslims mention any of these 3 dirty little details

  3. LK2H says:

    @PersianEmpirePride islam raped?

    dude. raping is illegal in islam.

    also we didnt invade those countries. prophet muhammad (why do you think hes called a messenger of islam) sent teaching scripts to many countries, and some countries had allready been followers of allah.

    also in islam slaves are forbidden

    Supernatural means beyond nature; “being above or beyond what is natural; unexplainable by natural law or phenomena”

    So either the supernatural doesn’t exist because the natural world is all there is, or the supernatural does exist but it cannot effect the natural world because it is removed from the natural world. Either way, it has no bearing on me, so why recognize it?

    @knowwaie

    … also some of the Greek historians consider the birth date of Zoroastra 7000 years before that of Socrates.

  11. sal7va7dor says:

    Zoroastrianism was practiced by various Aryan/Iranic tribes all across the Iranian plateau and beyond, it was the main religion of the Meds (an Iranic people before the Persians), it became the most populated religion of the world, not under the Persians, but under the Parthians (another Iranic people who ruled Iran after the Persians). Many other non-Iranic people of the world adopted many aspects of its ideologies during the Parthian rule…..

  12. sal7va7dor says:

    @knowwaie
    ….. continued. This is the name that is all over Avesta. Zoroastra renounced all the Nature Gods of the ancient Aryans. He also renounced all the Deevas and said they are not worthy of worship. He said that there is only one God who is Ahura Mazda (the ultimate knowledge and wisdom), and there is Ahriman (the ultimate ignorance) and you are free to chose which side you want to be on.

  13. sal7va7dor says:

    @knowwaie
    Here is where you are mistaking. You are relating Zoroastrianism to the empire which was built by the Persian people. Although the Persian people contributed a great deal to the religion, the religion itself was not founded by them. Followers of Zoroastra practiced this religion long before the Persian people started migrating and settling south to what it was back then called Ilamit empire. Farther more, Zoroastra was born in an empire called “Arya Vajeh” or the land of Aryans….

  14. knowwaie says:

    @sal7va7dor That’s a lie. That is what i meant by allowing history to speak from silence. You’re assuming the Torah borrowed from others and not the other way around only because we don’t have the original ancient documents, which according to the records were wiped out while the Jews were being dominated by each empire. Though we still do have the dead sea scrolls which definitively puts the Hebrew people before the Persian empire. The facts don’t agree with your view.

  15. sal7va7dor says:

    @knowwaie
    How could Torah be the originator of theology when itself borrowed so many of the ideologies from Zoroastrianism, and other theistic systems of beliefs before it?

  16. knowwaie says:

    @sal7va7dor No. This is just an example of letting a particular empire define history. Persia did exist before the Greek Empire. According to the Assyrians who came before and was much inspiration to the Persians. Especially ancient Hebrew text which show them even further back in history. What you’re doing is letting history argue from silence, but it doesn’t work like that. The Hebrew Torah was the originator of theology, and you know it.

  17. sal7va7dor says:

    @knowwaie
    and Zoroastra was born before Abraham! The empire was called “Arya Vajeh” at his time, not the “Persian” empire. And “Persian” Empire never really existed. It is what the Greeks called Iran. So in the west many people know Iranic stalk as “Persian”, of which they are wrong. Persians are only a small percentage of the Iranic people.

  18. sal7va7dor says:

    @tarashti

    I love the zoroastrian religion, but when you say its followers haven’t shed blood in the name of this religion, it is wrong. You should take a look at the Sassanid era to understand what I mean.

  19. knowwaie says:

    Judaism existed before the Persian empire.

  20. VjSheri says:

    @darushbozorg muslims dont pray towards stone u r absolutely wrong……

  21. kashgar22 says:

    I think that even though Islam conquered Persia and supplanted Zoroastrianism, Islam in Persia was itself in turn modified to become something uniquely Persian. If I remember correctly, Zoroastrianism thinks of the forces of good and evil. When we do good we strengthen that side of the ledger. Anyway, thanks for the interesting intro. Oh, and of course Zoroastrianism influenced both Christianity & Judaism.

    I have thus far challenged over 50 so-called individual theologians & philosophical experts to refute the information I placed in my new book

    Thus far the 50 challenges I have sent out the theologians & philosophers all over the world I have not received a single reply

    Let me repeat that!

    I have not received a single reply from any so-called theologian or philosopher on earth since I started this endeavor four months ago

    Cowards 1 & ALL ~

    Child’s play compared to what I have just accomplished by literally utilizing a methodology combining the {~ONE DOLLAR BILL~} & the Bible as 2 individual parts of the most complex story ever told throughout all of history & the only methodology that which the Lord God itself has sanctioned for the proof beyond doubt of its own existence

    This God is not the God of Christianity per se but the God of all living things both past present and future.

    @MattHunX debating an evangelical can be a very daunting task since they will just spew tons of bullshit at you.

  27. SuperMarco7 says:

    micheal shermer is a great debater but to be honest not his greatest debate. still a debate worth watching if u have the time to see it. thumbs up for both guys they stood their ground and answer easy questions i like when they try to answer the difficult ones.

  28. MattHunX says:

    Why come up with the concept of hell?

    Very easy answer: intimidation. Control through fear if some choose not to follow a god. Religion is useful for keeping people in line, as it has been asserted by many leaders through history.

    Here’s a loving, just god who will watch over you if you embrace his love. If you don’t he’ll “cast you forth as branch, which then withers, then he gathers the branches and throws them in fire.”

    Nothing but a method for control, from the New Testament, no less.

  30. krizzia1000 says:

    @maestro4110 true if you do not know and experience God. I experience God that is why with the grace of God no atheism idea can get through me. May the good Lord talk to you and let you feel His great love for you. God loves us all so much it is a great pity that people who had been loved by God so much would turn their hearts from Him. Good God have mercy on us all.

  31. mariocobos2001 says:

    I think Shermer was hungover.. Next time call Sam Harris. This was a fairly standard and easily winnable debate.

  33. julzabro says:

    @Keysteeze U said, “The internal inconsistency,? violence, and unlikely supernatural claims of any holy text are in no way related to the question of religion’s social utility. ” WHAT?! So how do YOU determine religion’s social utility????

  34. Keysteeze says:

    The internal inconsistency, violence, and unlikely supernatural claims of any holy text are in no way related to the question of religion’s social utility. Furthermore, criticism of religious text are in no way an argument for or against the existence of God(s). It seems that to many people, pointing out absurdities in ancient text go hand in hand with: 1) Anti-religious sentiment (seeking the eradication of religion). 2) Philosophical materialism and/or non-theism. Very strange indeed.

  41. B5guy says:

    When Jesus came he didn’t use the word religion, he just taught people about God ways, how we are suppose to treat each other so where did it religion come from?

  42. lonnie333 says:

    Wow, this Sherman guy is awful. Even his jokes suck.

  43. misterzonker2584 says:

    Damn, I like Shermer, but he doesn’t do well here. I was expecting him to give D’Souza a sound ass-kicking, and he just doesn’t do it here, and it’s not like he doesn’t have ample opportunity. All he does is spout off talking points and make concessions, and this is without making very many points of his own – he doesn’t counter D’Souza well at all. I’m sorry to say that D’Souza probably wins this one.

  44. misterzonker2584 says:

    The Inquisition only killed 2,000 people? Just because the Vatican says so doesn’t make it true! (Let’s not forget that they were the ones responsible for it!) They only measured a certain period of it, and they are not accounting for all those who died in prison waiting for a trial, which was many times more than those executed. And the Church confiscated all their property. Also, the Inquisition (all four parts) was 650 years, not 350 (that was the Spanish one)! What apologetic bullshit!

  45. kaifroland says:

    Shermer is way too nice when debating these charlatans.

  46. kaifroland says:

    @Imirror1 Not even D’souza is so far out there that he disputes evolutionary biology.

  47. Redcaster916 says:

    Good people will do good things and bad people will do bad things but to get a good person to? do bad things requires religion

  48. Seigu007 says:

    Watch Shermer get his ass handed to him. Google: “Stephen C. Meyer + Shermer”. TIIIIIIIIMMMMMBEEEERRRRR!!!

  49. Imirror1 says:

    So far…D’souza is the best God’s advocate.Creationist style.

  50. Imirror1 says:

    @Beeblebrox55 You are talking about the god of war.God is just a symbol of power,in this case,a evil god.
