Are there any colleges that have mythology/world religion/philosophy studies?

Question by Gaby: Are there any colleges that have mythology/world religion/philosophy studies?
I’m going to be a sophomore this year in high school, and I want to start looking for colleges. I’m really into world religion and mythology around the world, and a little philosophy. But I’m having a hard time finding some courses/colleges. Ideas/Tips?

You can use www.collegeboard.com to find all colleges that offer certain majors. Philosophy tends to be offered by tons of colleges, so you should be able to find that somewhere. Religion/theology/comparative religions is also quite common. Mythology – far less common. But know that it’s likely that any college that offers majors like philosophy and religion and classics, as well as “area studies” like Middle Eastern Studies, Judaic Studies, etc., will offer courses related to mythologies. You’re really looking for a college that has a good, strong liberal arts program – Middlebury, Amherst, UMass Amherst, Smith, U Vermont, Cornell, etc.

Most universities have Philosophy and Religion/Religious Studies departments. In the latter, you can study world and comparative religions, and you can often focus on mythology and folklore in those and in other departments. Take a look at the Yale Religious Studies site below.

Another possibility is designing your own major, which would involve an interdisciplinary approach and taking courses in several departments, such as Classics, History, Comparative Literature, Philosophy, and Religious Studies.

The first site I’ve given you focuses on graduate programs, but it still might give you some idea of schools where designing a major might be possible. And you might look for folklore programs. I think Berkeley has one.
