If you got to a Catholic university and there is a required religion course is it about WORLD religions?

Or is it just about the teachings of Catholic religion
Because I don’t want to be taught how to live a good life as a “Catholic”
I would LOVE a class where you learn about all different religions in the world, but not just single Catholicism.

nope, just Catholic. maybe that’s also the reason why they are called “Catholic” universities.

  2. MSB says:

Check their course offerings to see which classes fulfill the requirement.

If it is a Catholic university, they might require a class on Catholicism.

I went to a Lutheran University and we had 2 required religion courses. I chose to take SE Asian Religions and Religion of the “Old Testament” rather than the Life of Jesus or other such courses.

At my Jesuit Uni, I have never taken a class on Catholicism or Christianity.
I have taken ones on comparative religion, world religions, Islam, and Buddhism/Taoism/Hinduism.
It depends on the college you apply to.
All schools are different, but if you want to go to a Catholic school, I suggest a Jesuit one 😉
They are usually some of the most well respected schools in the country (see: Georgetown, Xavier, Loyola Marymount, Boston College, U of San Francisco and Fordham) and are very open towards people of all backgrounds – that’s just how the Jesuits are.

I’m an atheist and I LOVE Xavier!

    1. Catholism is a cult. Why do people have to pray to people, like preists instead of directly to God? Why does the pope have so many followers? He is idolized…not okay. Why do Catholics have to sit down and stand up so many times during mass…too many “rules” that don’t make any sense.

    2. They don’t want you to learn about other religions…because they’re a cult. BTW, most religions are. But there can be one or two great things about each religion that I walk away with.

Many Catholic universities will require a course in Catholic Christianity, but they probably will also offer courses on world religion. Catholicism courses in university generally assume that you are already familiar with the fundamentals of the religion and often look at Church history, a specific set of issues (like death and the after life or the creation of the Bible), and generally don’t begin with things that are covered in catechism classes. If you really don’t want to take any classes about Catholicism, why go to a Catholic college?

In my experience, there are any number of courses that fulfill the requirements – many not specifically Christian. I am sure you will find a “world religions” survey type of course that fulfills this requirement at any Roman Catholic university.

It depends on the school. ALL Catholic schools WILL have courses dealing with Catholic theology. That’s guaranteed.
It would not surprise me if most Catholic schools offered at least one “world religion” course as well.

Know that, if you do go to a CATHOLIC school, you ARE going to be taught CATHOLICISM. If this isn’t what you want, I HIGHLY recommend you go some other route.

You best take a close look at the course curriculum at whatever Catholic school you are considering. Like I said, most will offer some courses in world religions but, given that we’re talking about Catholic school, the bulk of theology you will be taught at Catholic school will be Catholic.

Catholics actually do recognize that there are other religions in the world. A World Religion course at a university should cover all the major world religions, not just Catholicism.

It depends on the university. You can study it also on-line

Also great reading is Ravi Zacharias’ ” Jesus among other gods”

You’d have to check the course syllabus and see what’s covered.
