I’ve never been from the Christian perspective, but it’s amazing from the one of a tourist. I would recommend spending time in Tel Aviv, because it’s a wonderful city. I’m not sure where you’re from, but it gets really, really hot this time of year, so you might want to wait a few months. Also remember that they don’t use American money as much as we do (obviously) so think about converting to Shekels. Hope this helps a bit.

I’m Israeli- and I recommend you to wait a bit- it’s really hot and humid here right now (october will be cooler).

I can’t recommend any good Christian sites (because I’m Jewish, and don’t know enough in order to make a recommendation).
don’t forget to convert your money into shekels- however- most “tourists” shops got the prices in Dollars too.
you can use bus, trains, and cabs- you have it all, but the more english “friendly” will be by a train. most people (especially in Tel Aviv) speak english, and as Israelis we will be more than happy to be nosy and try to help if you ask for directions…..

look around the web for “Boutique Hotels” in Tel Aviv- this are little apartments right in the center- you will “get the real feel” of the city better than a big hotel.

you have a train that takes you from Ben Gorion Airport to Tel Aviv (one of the 3 stops in TA is the Azrielli shopping mall, and the Crowne Plaza hotel- pretty expensive, but easier to get around)

I’m not Jewish and I’ve been twice – once on the spur of the moment on an arranged tour from Cyprus when we visited the Holy sites. There are specific tours arranged from the UK (where I live) and I’m sure there will be ones from the US, so travel arrangements will be made for you if you choose this route.
We visited Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth and the Crucifixion site. I’m not a committed Christian either, although having been raised as one, but I must admit that I came away feeling very, saddened for Believers, at the blatant commercialisation of the sites by Christian religions.
Our second visit was the end of March last year and we did this as independent travellers. Flew from England to Tel Aviv, hired a car, and drove down to the Dead Sea where we stayed in Village Rooms (found on the internet) but had a day pass into one of the Spa Hotels (The Lot Hotel). This was a cheap way of financing our stay but being able to take advantage of the hotel facilities, such as the fresh and salt water pools and the hotel restaurant.
We “swam” (waded rather) in Dead Sea water and climbed to the top of Masada (a very moving experience and one which needs a whole day)
From Tel Aviv, we stopped for a few days in Zichron Yaakov (recommended) and made day trips from there. Also recommended.
Travelling by road around the Country gives you a whole new perspective on the “Israeli/Arab problem”. With over a million Arabs living in Israel and Bedouins wandering freely with their camels you do start to wonder how much of the “problem” is media-hype.
Good shopping in Tel Aviv, small shopping areas scattered all around the Country. More Roman-era pottery fragments than you could imagine on the beaches. Eating is cheap – the shish kebab is very popular.
Don’t go at this time of year – much too hot and humid for travelling between mid-day and 8.0 p.m.

The jewish travel agency was responsible for the loss of my $600 in 2006.
They promised a 5 star hotel and instead, I was sent to a sleazy backpackers hostel with a shared bathroom that smell urine 50 meters away.
I left next morning to Cyprus where I had the time of my life.
I would never go to israel not even if it’s for free. The jews are very rude and too money-loving for my taste. Good luck.

You should not to buy stolen things, and everything in Israel has been stolen from Palestinians. Otherwise, you condone and support stealing when you do.

There is no better place on Earth to visit, however Im not so sure what you could do with $2k a month. I would assume you would want to live in Jerusalem. People are recommending Tel Aviv…I personally disagree with that but it depends what your after. Tel Aviv is a great city from a secular point of view, but you sure arent going to be inspired there. Israel is very expensive, but you could probably rent a room for a short time and still have money to play with. No matter what you end up choosing, you should go. You wont regret it. Nesia Tova!
