Time Travelling In North Wales: Historic Sites To Visit In Snowdonia

There’s no escaping history when you visit Snowdonia. It’s everywhere you turn. From Iron Age burial chambers and Roman forts to medieval castles and Victorian follies, Snowdonia’s mountains and coast are awash with history.

Some of the oldest historic structures that you can visit in Snowdonia today were built in prehistoric times. There are many prehistoric standing stones in the region, as well as a number of burial chambers and hill forts. Worth a visit are the standing stones in the hills around Harlech, as are the Bachwen burial chamber at Clynnog Fawr and the remains of a prehistoric hill fort at Dinas Dinlle. But arguably the most awesome prehistoric site in Snowdonia is Tre’r Ceiri, a huge Iron Age settlement on the Llyn Peninsula, where a 30-minute upward trek reveals the remains of 150 stone huts and a huge rampart, all on the slopes of Yr Eifl overlooking the Irish Sea 400 feet below.

The Romans left their mark on Snowdonia, too. After overthrowing local inhabitants and occupying their settlements, the Romans built their own formidable fort – Segontium – on the outskirts of modern-day Caernarfon. This fascinating site – one of Britain’s best-known Roman remains – is open to the public along with a museum displaying finds from the fort.

Snowdonia was a hive of activity during the days of the early Celtic Christian church. Many important Celtic religious sites were established in Snowdonia during the 6th and 7th centuries, including monasteries, churches and abbeys. Bangor Cathedral’s origins can be traced back to this era, while the little island of Bardsey off the Llyn Peninsula was home to a Celtic monastery and became an important religious site, where it is said that 20,000 saints are buried. Three pilgrimages to Bardsey equalled one to Rome, and key points along the pilgrims’ route can still be visited today – as can Bardsey itself, which is accessible by boat from Aberdaron at the tip of the Llyn Peninsula.

During the Middle Ages the English king Edward I built a number of castles and walled towns across North Wales to subdue the Welsh, and many of these survive today – mostly in excellent condition. Caernarfon and Conwy castles and their town walls (UNESCO World Heritage sites) are beautifully preserved, while Harlech Castle, perched high on a cliff-edge, has been described as “the definitive Welsh castle”. But it’s not just Edward’s castles that survive; there are Welsh castles too, like Dolwyddelan and Criccieth, which are just as impressive.

But castles aren’t the only medieval buildings still standing in Snowdonia. You’ll see many medieval houses, bridges, churches and other structures in the region, too. Like Ty Hyll, just outside Betws-y-Coed – a cottage which according to legend was built in one night. And the lonely church of St Baglan at Llanfaglan, just outside Caernarfon, with an ancient holy well nearby.

The towns, villages and open countryside of Snowdonia Mountains and Coast are dotted with Tudor and Elizabethan buildings, from modest cottages and farmhouses to elaborate halls and castellated mansions. Two of the best examples can be found in Conwy. Aberconwy House, a merchant’s townhouse now owned and managed by the National Trust, dates predominantly from the 16th century, although parts of the building are a few hundred years older; while at the nearby Elizabethan mansion Plas Mawr – one of Britain’s finest examples of the period – you’ll see some beautiful restored and painted plasterwork.

At Glynllifon Country Park, just outside Caernarfon, there have been several large and important houses over the centuries. The present mansion was built in the early Victorian period, amidst beautiful grounds which include peaceful woodland walks, follies, an old hermitage and a modern slate amphitheatre where you may be lucky enough to catch an open-air concert or play. And there are many other fine examples of 19th century architecture around Snowdonia, like Penrhyn Castle near Bangor and Bryn Bras Castle just outside Caernarfon.

But Snowdonia’s historic sites can also have very modern origins. We tend not to think of 20th century buildings as ‘historic’, and yet Portmeirion Village is just that. Portmeirion – the setting for the 1960s TV series The Prisoner – mixes the old and the new to create one of the region’s most picturesque and popular attractions. Old buildings and ancient woodlands come together with 20th century creations that are traditional in design; new buildings incorporate antique architectural features – like the intricately carved Jacobean ceiling in the village’s Town Hall – and old structures have been lovingly restored. In building Portmeirion, the village’s creator – Sir Clough Williams-Ellis – clearly achieved his aim to “develop even a very beautiful site without defiling it”, and proved his philosophy that “given sufficient loving care one could even improve on what God had provided”.

Steven Jones is Senior Tourism Services Officer at Cyngor Gwynedd Council, a Welsh local authority whose not-for-profit Snowdonia Mountains and Coast website provides visitors to Snowdonia with a wealth of useful information about the region, including activities, attractions, history and culture. The site also enables visitors to search an extensive database of Snowdonia accommodation, and to plan their holidays in some of Snowdonia’s most popular towns and villages.

Religions Do not Unite the People

Religions do not unite the people

Dalip Singh Wasan, Advocate.

It must be accepted that religions could not unite the people of the world. It must be accepted that this world has been divided on the basis of religions and on the administrative side this world is divided on the basis of countries. All these divisions had been wasting the time of the people and it must be on record that most of the wars and conflicts had been there because of establishment of different religions and because of establishment of different countries. Had there been one world and had there been one religion or no religion at all the people of this world could have avoided all these wars and all these conflicts and more time and energy could have been utilized for the welfare of this man and there were chances that more inventions and discoveries could have been made by this man. And had we traveled on the right direction for these centuries, this world would become Heaven we could have seen God with naked eyes.

It must be accepted that all religions had been taking birth at different places and that had been the reason names of religions are different. We do not know much about the basic principles which were laid down at the first instance, but if today, we study the religious scriptures, we come to the conclusion that all the religions tell us the same things and there is no difference in principles of the religions. But the religions have divided the people and now we can recognize a person standing before us and we can tell to which religion this man belongs and what are his thoughts about us. We have different places of worship, different books, different thoughts, different haircut, different languages, different clothes and different way of saluting each other. And at the same time we are divided and we feel that the people in other religions are not taking any interest in our welfare. This is the tragedy with this man and now a stage has come where this man is not in a position to shed off all the religions and establish a common religion. There had been some works toward this direction, but none of the efforts could establish one religion.

The man is still going on and they are establishing different sub religions and they are successful. The people who have adopted this way to earn money, they are successful because it is very easy to collect people in these units and then snatch away money from them. People who have entered this profession are successful and have become known people and at the same time, they have collected huge amounts of money and are enjoying life like rich people and like powerful people.

At present the position is more dangerous because most of the major religions have established themselves and they are at war with each other simply because they are different. All the religions have started establishing themselves and they are constructing big buildings and are collecting all mythology around their religions. They have appointed scholars to dig out mythology and history concerning their religion and they are in competition with each other. People in one religion are telling us that they are the first in finding out real God and they are also saying that they are more powerful only because they belong to that particular religion and others are weak because they belong to another weak and false religion. People are trying to establish that people in their religion are the right persons and people in other religions are false, wrong and unreligious people.

So if the present trends go on, there are chances this world shall be divided into Muslims, Christians and Hindus and there are chances the next division of this world would be based on these three religions and there are chances that all the countries shall be merged religions-wise and there shall be three groups, three countries in the world and there are chances that there should be an upheaval as had happened when Hindustan was divided in 1947 into India and Pakistan in which 8,00,000 people had been killed and atleast 11,00,00,000 had been uprooted and migrated to unknown places. The wise people of the world should sit together and they should try to establish one religion which should be common to all and the present division on the basis of religions should go. Otherwise this world created by God shall turn Hell and we all shall suffer in it.

Jesus’ 1st miracle was at Cana is this the same Q’ana where the children were bombed?

Jesus turned water into wine at the marriage at Cana. I heard somewhere that Cana = Q’ana in S. Lebanon, a town that was completely destroyed by bombing and where > 30 mothers and children were killed when they hid in a basement. I can’t find a reliable reference for this, if you know one, please post. Also, if there are other Christian sites in S. Lebanon that you know about, can you give me a reference? I think there are at least a few because Jesus travelled all around the area. No insults please, I’m seeking information.
43 – Jesus has nothing to do with Aljazeera. Are you trying to be clever? Either this is true or not , it doesn’t have to do with a political orientation, facts are facts and this should be a simple one.
wiseguy: In Catholic school, I was taught this was Jesus’ first miracle, I don’t recall the Gospel but will check. Catholics don’t learn the Bible as well as Protestants.
John 2:1-11.

Noone had info, Y!A not good for much besides insults. Wikipedia says “While the village of Qana, now in southern Lebanon, is said to be an unlikely candidate for the location, many Lebanese Christians believe Qana to be the correct site. ”

Modern Philosophy Of Religion – ?I’ll Have A Mocca Easter To Go Please?

The scent of cinnamon, windows steamed up by the burning oven, a little girl with hair as gold covered in flour and smiling at you. The yellow sun warming your neck, the smell of freshly cut grass and the twinkle in the eye of the eight year old boy in front of you holding up a painted egg. Holidays go well together with cosy family moments. Whether it’s baking a cake for Mother’s Day with your daughter or enjoying the neighborhood kids searching for Easter eggs in your backyard, these days are of special meaning to us.

The roots of Easter lay in a warm land overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. After Moses had brought back the people of Israel from their exile as slaves in Egypt, this was the place they settled. The decided they would hold an annual celebration of the fact they escaped from their Egyptian rulers. This holiday was called Pesach and is celebrated to this day by Jews all over the world. One of the Jews who celebrated this holiday and travelled to Jerusalem each year to do so, was Jesus. The last year he sat down to the festive meal of Pesach with his entourage is now history. For not long after that final supper Jesus was crucified and his body was placed in a cave with a large rock covering the entrance. On the third day after his death Jesus resurrects and the cave was empty.

This resurrection of Jesus is what we commemorate with Easter. So at the heart of this holiday is a spiritual and miraculous event. Quite in contrast with the decorated window displays and storefronts we see each year. No sign of suffering, no crosses, no resurrection. If we look at other holidays the same applies: the original meaning of the holidays has moved more and more to the background. A lot has been said about how the meaning of holidays seems inferior to the profit they produce. But for once, let’s not dramatically mourn this ‘rampant commercialism’ or mindlessly indulge ourselves rushing through some warehouse in search of that one imperial Easter egg to trump the neighbors. Let’s not immediately pick sides on whether it’s a bad thing the meaning behind our holidays is not as apparent as it used to be. Let’s refrain from judgment and simply wonder how this occurred.

You see, these complaints are not even new. The loss of rituals in daily life, the limited time people spent on their spiritual growth and the decline of influence of the church have been lamented for more than four centuries now. It is not a typically modern phenomenon. Ever since the Enlightenment people have become more and more responsible for the way the shape their lives. This process has gone hand in hand with people evading institutionalized religion. And although people in the West seem less inclined to visit church, study their bibles or even inform themselves on the underlying meaning of the holiday they are celebrating, most of them are still in search of some form of spirituality.

But as modern man evolved, so did his spiritual needs. As he became more individualized so did his path to meaning in his life. We all casually combine Tai Chi or Yoga with Ikebana, faithful to the post-modern creed that ‘there is no one truth, but all the more perspectives on it’. Emancipation of our own thinking and our own beliefs has led us to each our own story. That is precisely the way we treat our holidays. We pick, mix and match even the things that are sacred to us. We choose which holidays we wish to celebrate, and the way we would like to celebrate them. Making sure that even performing rituals and acknowledging the meaning of these holidays suits our best convenience.

And although the last paragraph seems to suggest discomfort from yours truly, I can assure you: there is none. For the worth of philosophy or comparative religion studies lies in the understanding, not in judging. It helps us get a glimpse of who we are and how we became like this. Coming to terms with what we find, is a whole other story.
